• Ewenny Pottery Pots Drying

    The Life of The Pot

Every piece of pottery at Ewenny Pottery is handmade in our small workshop. Initially, each item is thrown on a potter's wheel. Once shaped, the pottery is left to dry naturally for approximately a week. Following this drying period, we meticulously clean each piece and inscribe the distinctive Ewenny Pottery signature on the bottom. The pots are carefully packed and then fired in electric kilns to a temperature of 1000°C, a process that spans about two days, allowing for both heating and cooling.

After this initial firing, the pots undergo glazing. A glaze is a liquid composition crafted from clay, stone, and various oxides. The making and application of the glaze may seem straightforward, however it demands a high level of skill and a presise understanding of the chemistry involved. Each pot is carefully dipped in one glaze, with another glaze splashed around its surface. Once glazed, the pots are returned to the kiln for a second firing at an elevated temperature of 1100°C, a process that again lasts for another two days.

During this firing, the glazes melt together, resulting in the signature Ewenny Pottery mottled decoration. Finally, after this intricate journey, the crafted pots go through intense inspection before they are ready for sale in our showroom located next to the workshop. The entire process spans several weeks and is a reflection of our craftsmanship, care and commitment to our customers and collectors.
